beyond the image
Exploring old Japanese photographs I imagine myself in the environment shown and discover the meaning of underlying cultural themes. Merged with memories of my journey to Japan I feel the urge to draw beyond the edge of the photographs; fine and delicate like the blossom of the Sakura tree. Inspired by the ancient Japanese technology of hand coloring of souvenir photos in 1880 during the Meiji Era, I intervene by adding subtle colors and hand drawing. Turning the historical photos into new contemporary images; the family originally portrayed in a studio is now in the natural habitat of a spiritual and refined bamboo forest.
