A dear old Chinese woman once gave me an antique gold men’s ring. It had belonged to her family, and on its surface a finely crafted dragon was engraved. This symbol immediately brought to mind the last Chinese emperor, Pu Yi — the only person permitted to wear the dragon in clothing and jewellery.
His life intrigued me: a survivor who continually adapted to the sweeping transformations of China’s empire. I translated the phases of his life into a photographic narrative, using screen prints on glass, three‑dimensional objects, and references to ancient Chinese symbols.
